Even in the Last Days, God is Still Working

“People just don’t want the truth anymore!”  “God isn’t saving anybody anymore”.  “I mean it’s the last days and all”.  These are all excuses I’ve heard more than once as to why we don’t see God moving very much today.  Without a doubt, the Bible informs us “evil people and impostors will go on from bad to worse, deceiving and being deceived” (2 Timothy 3:13).  Unquestionably, this verse has been validated in our times.  The days are evil that we live in.  Mankind has chosen to forget God.  This is true of every people group on the planet.  That said, we shouldn’t interpret this to mean that God is not still busy.  He most certainly is.  He is still on the throne.  He is still pulling the strings.

It has been my experience that we often make such statements to excuse our own laziness.  Perhaps God isn’t moving in our churches because we aren’t carrying out the Great Commission.  How can we expect God to save souls and add them to our churches if we aren’t sharing the Gospel with anybody?  If our church members are 2 hour a week Christians (as far as real service goes), then God isn’t going to work through us.  Maybe we should consider that our churches are dying because we aren’t properly serving.  Perhaps we are reaping sparingly because that’s how we are sowing – sparingly (2 Corinthians 9:6).

God has determined to work through His Word.  He told Isaiah, “so shall my word be that goes out from my mouth; it shall not return to me empty, but it shall accomplish that which I purpose, and shall succeed in the thing for which I sent it” (Isaiah 55:11).  Nothing is said here about God changing His means during the last days.  He is still working through His Word.  Paul told the church at Corinth that “it pleased God through the folly of what we preach to save those who believe” (1 Corinthians 1:21).  This message is the Gospel – “Christ crucified” (1 Corinthians 1:23).  It is the duty of every child of God to share this message with those around him.  Somehow, we have developed a system where only church leadership is expected to witness to anybody anymore.  This is not God’s plan.  I’m certainly not against inviting people to church.  That’s a good thing to do.  But don’t believe for a moment that equates with you sharing the Gospel with a lost sinner.

If we are not careful, we will become our own self-fulfilling prophecy.  As I hear pastors declare statements like “God isn’t saving anybody much since it’s the last days”, I cringe.  The Bible never says such a thing.  Even in the darkest moments of human history, God has shown Himself powerful to save.  And oftentimes, we see periods of revival to have been during such times.  God is able.  It is His ability that we trust in – not our own.

The Bible never once says God will stop saving people in the last days.  The Bible never once suggests that God would quit working during the latter times.  Let us not blame our own laziness on God.  He is busy.  He is still in the saving business.  He may raise up stones to work through if we are unwilling to do what He has called us to do (Luke 3:8).  So, let us carry forth the Gospel with zeal while understanding that He will accomplish His purpose as His Word goes forth.  Let us not compromise the truth of the Gospel in order to reach the world.  But let us not compromise our mission by telling our people they are fighting a losing battle.  God is not finished nor will He ever be.
