Just a warning – this may hurt. But if you spend hours a day listening to and talking about politics, politics may be your god. In the past several decades, political action has become more and more a central focus in local churches and in Christianity as a whole. Spiritual victory is often sought through political activism while a win at the ballot box is deemed to be a win for God. If social media is any indication of the true feelings of people (and I fear it is), the election of our favorite politician ranks far above the empty tomb of Jesus Christ. If social media exposes the heart of men, we’d rather win somebody to our political position than to the Gospel of Jesus Christ. This is true of pastors and laypeople alike. If social media has exposed the truth on this subject, we have a major problem with the place of politics in American Christianity.
